iggy1105 (ID=71) (Jan 18, 2001 6:58:33 PM)
when is the deadline for admissions and what is the best format to send for a portfolio

Rick - Alfred (ID=59) (Jan 18, 2001 6:58:50 PM)
(This user has entered 3. Fin. Aid & Admissions) (IP = 209.34.91.23 )

manhattan (ID=69) (Jan 18, 2001 6:59:35 PM)
who signs off on loans if necessary ? Is it the parents or the student themselves?

Stacey @ Alfred (ID=60) (Jan 18, 2001 6:59:53 PM)
The Admissions Deadline is February 1 (postmark), for applications and portfolios. This is also our preferred date for supporting materials, though we realize that it may take the school a few extra days to get materials to us.

jl-aid counselor (ID=64) (Jan 18, 2001 7:00:52 PM)
Manhattan, for the student loan the student is the only person who needs to sign. The loan is taken out in the students name. If you take out a parent loan, the loan will be in the parents name and the parent will have to pay it back.

eh_lina (ID=68) (Jan 18, 2001 7:01:11 PM)
ok well my father gets paid very well but he won't be helping me with college but he puts me in with his taxes so it's going to be very expensive for me is there anyway i can avoid this

Stacey @ Alfred (ID=60) (Jan 18, 2001 7:01:16 PM)
When sending portfolios we recommend that the slides be packed in a slide box, rather than a slide sheet. Although we haven't had problems, the potential for damage is less in a box.

iggy1105 (ID=71) (Jan 18, 2001 7:01:17 PM)
now this is for a completed application or can you be missing a few sections but still be able to finish in time?

manhattan (ID=69) (Jan 18, 2001 7:01:57 PM)
We are in danger of being late with the portfolio. What happens then?

jl-aid counselor (ID=64) (Jan 18, 2001 7:02:41 PM)
Everyone should file the FAFSA form for financial aid, and the Alfred University financial aid applications which will be sent toyou shortly after you apply for admissions. We would then be able to give you an estimate of what you might be eligible for

Stacey @ Alfred (ID=60) (Jan 18, 2001 7:03:15 PM)
We request that the application be postmarked by Feb. 1, we will accept supporting materials after that date.

iggy1105 (ID=71) (Jan 18, 2001 7:04:46 PM)
i havent been able to finish my essays ,but i can send in it in after Feb 1 ? also is there a deadline for supporting information?

manhattan (ID=69) (Jan 18, 2001 7:04:53 PM)
my child has already done the application. So if the porfolio is a little late, say Feb.15 is that ok?

manhattan, was that the answer you were looking for

Stacey @ Alfred (ID=60) (Jan 18, 2001 7:05:21 PM)
I would encourage you to work to get the portfolio in on time. The school of art and design is a very competative program and it is to the student's advantage to meet the deadline. If an extension is absolutely necessary than you can call our admissions office (1-800-541-9229) and request an extention. These are usually granted for special circumstances and are generally only for a few days.

jl-aid counselor (ID=64) (Jan 18, 2001 7:11:07 PM)
manhattan you need to fill out the fafsa, and report your 2000 income. If you lost your job this year there is a section on the alfred university aid application that asks you to describe any special circumstances. We do review all documentation that is submitted

iggy1105 or anyone, of you or your parents have not filed the 2000 income tax forms you can either estimate on the fafsa form, or A.U.'s recommended deadline for filing the fafsa and the alfred univeristy financial aid forms is march 15 .

you can use the older income tax returns, but if your parents information changes from year to year it is up to you. If you round figures, round in the 100 of dollars, not 1,000 of dollars. If you estimate, the further your estimates are off the further your first inital aid package could be off, but we verify all information so we would request yours and your parents tax returns and other information later on.

Stacey @ Alfred (ID=60) (Jan 18, 2001 7:39:46 PM)
Okay, Bustr, what kind of basic questions do you have? Our middle 50% of students generally have a solid B to B+ average and a 1050-1250 on their SAT's

Stacey @ Alfred (ID=60) (Jan 18, 2001 7:40:14 PM)

Stacey @ Alfred (ID=60) (Jan 18, 2001 7:42:09 PM)
Coaches have the opportunity to share their impressions of who might serve as contributing members of our teams, though the admissions decision is based on the academic review, recommendations, essay and extracurricular activities.

soccermom (ID=72) (Jan 18, 2001 7:42:25 PM)
grades...how do you equate the 2?

jl-aid counselor (ID=64) (Jan 18, 2001 7:42:33 PM)
ryan do you have any questions regarding financial aid or admissions

Stacey @ Alfred (ID=60) (Jan 18, 2001 7:44:19 PM)
Well, our counselors work on a regional basis and we tend to be pretty familiar with the individual schools that we work with. If you wanted a numeric equivilant it would generally be 84-89, but may be different in relation to your child's individual school.

Bustr (ID=86) (Jan 18, 2001 7:45:14 PM)
For soccer players that are below the 50% described above, but have great leadership skills and extensive extra-c activities, if accepted, is there assistance (tutors) at school to help

Stacey @ Alfred (ID=60) (Jan 18, 2001 7:45:38 PM)
And none of this is a hard and fast formula. 25% fall below and 25% of students land above the ranges that I shared. We spend a lot of time with each applicaiton.

Stacey @ Alfred (ID=60) (Jan 18, 2001 7:46:18 PM)
Tutors are available for all students, not just athletes.

Bustr (ID=86) (Jan 18, 2001 7:46:52 PM)
Is access to tutors easy to obtian?

Stacey @ Alfred (ID=60) (Jan 18, 2001 7:47:54 PM)

In my experience and as per another son now in college, faculty are generally available for meetings, and maybe some guidance, but usually extra help falls on graduate students. Are there really enough to go around when the semester gets busy

dp (ID=76) (Jan 18, 2001 7:50:11 PM)

soccermom (ID=72) (Jan 18, 2001 7:50:42 PM)
Stacy@Alfred...I think my last question was the one I chopped in two...but it was about equating a numeric grade with B to B+ average and I think that question was answered.

Stacey @ Alfred (ID=60) (Jan 18, 2001 7:52:07 PM)
Graduate students do not play a significant role in the tutoring opportunities on our campus. We maintain a 12:1 student to faculty ratio, so as to ensure that our students can get help from their instructors. We also hire students in the upper-level divisions of majors to tutor.

soccermom (ID=72) (Jan 18, 2001 7:52:29 PM)
I would also like to know if you have a projected total cost (tuition, room, board, etc.) for the School of Art and Design for 2001-2002?

Final costs for next year will not be set until late February, however I'd be happy to share this year's costs. For an in-state student entering A&D or Ceramic Engineering the total costs add up to $16,656. For out of state students it is $20,016. For students interested in the private colleges (Liberal Arts, Business, and Engineering and Professional Studies) it is $26,282 for an incoming freshman.

Stacey @ Alfred (ID=60) (Jan 18, 2001 7:59:18 PM)
There are no special applications to be considered for our scholarships (we automatically consider all applicants for awards). We can only grant one scholarship per student and we always ellect the one with the highest dollar amount.

soccermom (ID=72) (Jan 18, 2001 8:25:37 PM)
After the federal methodology had determined our expected family contribution, is there any way to dispute this figure or is it hard and fast based on the figures we sent in?

jl-aid counselor (ID=64) (Jan 18, 2001 8:28:05 PM)
it is based on the figures you enter on the fafsa, but we will verify the information you entered to make sure everything is okay on the forms. The federal gov. calculates the EFC

soccermom (ID=72) (Jan 18, 2001 8:29:45 PM)
So once the EFC is determined, Alfred tries to bridge the gap between EFC and total cost of Alfred with scholarships, grants, loans, work-study etc......is that how it works???

jl-aid counselor (ID=64) (Jan 18, 2001 8:34:11 PM)
The other types of loans that we have avalaible are alternative loans-taken out in the students name. but they need a cosigner, parent loans-taken out in the parents name and paid back by the parent while the student is in college, and the university also has a payment plan. If you are interested in the alternative or parent plus loans you would just call our office for the applications and how much you are eligible for.

Hello Lisa and Rick, I am Diane a financial aid couselor at Alfred.

I have a question about fafsa. I completed an online application for less than parttime, went through the whole procedure only to find out than if you're taking less than parttime (6 credit hours) you are not eligible for financial aid or student loans.

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:05:26 PM)
dp- hang on for one moment, i need to get an app for reference.

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 7:06:01 PM)
Lisa, Sorry about that other message. If you are less than part-time you do not qualify for the Stafford or Perkins federal loans, but you would be able to apply for a student alternative loan. Whether or not you would be approved for an alternative loan is also an issue. You may also be eligible for part-time Pell grant if you are at least three credit hours. Your student aid report should indicate whether or not you may be eligible for the Pell grant based on the information you provided.

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:06:22 PM)
dp- are you referring to asking family member information?

dp (ID=76) (Jan 18, 2001 7:06:58 PM)
home ownership - value of home etc

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:07:31 PM)
I think i need to defer to DC for that, as I am an admissions counselor.

Lisa (ID=75) (Jan 18, 2001 7:08:10 PM)
I can't even get past Alfred's financial aide department. They INSIST I am not eligible for ANYTHING. What can I do?

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:08:45 PM)
DP- i think Diane may be tied up for a moment, so I will do my best.....

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:09:16 PM)
all of the information we request is used to help us figure out how much money your family has to contribute to your education.

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:09:47 PM)
information about home ownership relates to how much moeny folks need to put into their homes as well as what sort of tax breaks they receive for owning a home.

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:10:32 PM)
does that help?

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 7:10:33 PM)
dp, Looking at the 2001/2002 AU ap, question #19 is home owner information. Neither AU of federal needs analysis methodology take home value/debt into consideration for the calculation of the expected family contribution. We use that information to help us better assess the family's circumstances.

you need to declare AU your # 1 choice by April 1st, I beleive.

you must notify the Natl Merit Corp by April 1 that Alfred is your first choice.

yes- we arward 25 each year

some are for full tuition room and board, some just tuition

MattH (ID=80) (Jan 18, 2001 7:15:35 PM)
In the description of the full tuition room and board ones, I got the impression that these were basically guaranteed if you met certain criteria

and that the rest were then sort of "space-available"

yes- if you are in the top 5% of your clawss with a 95 average, i think

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:16:11 PM)
uh, that would be class

MattH (ID=80) (Jan 18, 2001 7:16:51 PM)
So, since I meet those criteria, if I name Alfred as my first choice, I am basically guaranteed full tuition, room, and board?

dp (ID=76) (Jan 18, 2001 7:17:11 PM)
how many southern tier scholarships do you give- what criteria is used and their relative weight

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:17:13 PM)
rank in class and GPA are not strict guidlines, howver, in that we take into consideration the school you attend and your curriculum. but it seems like you'd be in good shape!

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:17:34 PM)
there is no definite number of souther tier scholarships

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:17:43 PM)
all student who qualify are considered

hello newcomers!

dp (ID=76) (Jan 18, 2001 7:18:29 PM)
how many so tier were awarded last year

MattH (ID=80) (Jan 18, 2001 7:18:48 PM)
One last question about the nat'l merit scholarships, since I'm from Chicago, is the difference between in and out of state tuition covered as well

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:18:49 PM)
DP- the same criteria re: gpa and rank are true for south tier as for what I said to Matt Re: national merit

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:19:16 PM)
matt- differenced in tuition relate to the program you apply to. what are you planning to study?

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 7:19:18 PM)
Matt-are you considering the private or public sector at AU

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:19:29 PM)
dp- i will have to look up the #, please give me just a moment

MattH (ID=80) (Jan 18, 2001 7:19:32 PM)
Actually, that was sort of my next question

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 7:19:44 PM)

MattH (ID=80) (Jan 18, 2001 7:20:12 PM)
The reason I'm applying to Alfred is that I'm looking to dual-major in materials science and ceramic art & design

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:20:20 PM)
the New York State college of ceramics (ceramic engineering, materials science and art and design) are state funded

MattH (ID=80) (Jan 18, 2001 7:20:40 PM)
Alfred, therefore, seemed the logical place to apply

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:20:43 PM)
the out of state tuition is about $12,000

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:20:52 PM)
yes- a good choice :)

MattH (ID=80) (Jan 18, 2001 7:20:58 PM)
Is the difference covered?

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:21:02 PM)
yes

mogval (ID=81) (Jan 18, 2001 7:21:25 PM)
What's the cost of room & board?

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 7:21:48 PM)
Last year was $7450 average

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:22:11 PM)
i am leaving for a moment to check on # of scholarships last year. please be patient.....

mogval (ID=81) (Jan 18, 2001 7:22:11 PM)
And does financial aide cover both tuition and R&B?

ann (ID=78) (Jan 18, 2001 7:23:11 PM)
can you please tell me how many presidential scholarships are generally awarded

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 7:23:17 PM)
It depends on your need and any scholarships you would be awarded. You need to receive an estimated award notice from us to determine what your aid would be.

MattH (ID=80) (Jan 18, 2001 7:23:29 PM)
I've talked to a current NYSCC student from Chicago, and she said that she has a friend who is doing the engineering/art and design dual-major, but I just wanted to double check that the college itself is ok with this--also, approximately how much longer would this program of study take to complete?

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:24:02 PM)
dp- i cannot locate exact numbers, but definately more than 50

dp (ID=76) (Jan 18, 2001 7:24:18 PM)
thanks

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 7:24:20 PM)
Ann, Renee would be better able to answer that question and she has left the chat room for a moment to answer another question.

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:24:27 PM)
your welcome.

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:24:47 PM)
i am back- i will answer matt's double major questions, then check on ann's questions

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:25:22 PM)
matt- you can do the double major, it will take a year or so to complete both, but that excludes and summer courses you would take or if you have any ap or college credits

dp (ID=76) (Jan 18, 2001 7:25:37 PM)
is there a particular commitment of AU to enroll southern tier students

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 7:25:58 PM)
I am leaving for a moment to see if I can get the answer ann's last question

ann (ID=78) (Jan 18, 2001 7:26:05 PM)
How soon after submitting the applicatiion does one hear on acceptance?

mogval (ID=81) (Jan 18, 2001 7:26:10 PM)
what's a "southern tier" student?

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:26:18 PM)
i don't know the exact number of presidential scholarships, either, and my computer froze the last time i tried to check.

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:26:49 PM)
there is no set number of presidential scholarships given. everyone who qualifies will be considered.

MattH (ID=80) (Jan 18, 2001 7:26:50 PM)
the student also said that Ceramics courses are also extremely difficult to register for, is there priority registration or some such thing for honors college students?

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:27:20 PM)
in terms of timing, most students hear within a few weeks of the application being complete. all students who apply on time will hear by mid march.

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:28:03 PM)
DP- i think that we encourage southern tier students to consider aflred b/c we are in their "backyard"

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:28:15 PM)
it is always noce to have somewhat local students represent our univeristy

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:28:37 PM)
souther tier refers to the 8 counties along the sothern, western border of NY

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:28:40 PM)
matt-

MattH (ID=80) (Jan 18, 2001 7:28:54 PM)
yep

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 7:28:56 PM)
I'd say about 150 Presidentials last year

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:29:08 PM)
my sense of registering for classes (and i was a student at AU as well) is that if you go through pre registration, then you can get the courses you need

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:29:15 PM)
thanks diane!

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:29:36 PM)

we always welcome students to interview, dp

MattH (ID=80) (Jan 18, 2001 7:30:16 PM)

likewise, if you have questions that need to be answered, you should always feel free to call on us

incoming freshmen register for classes over the summer

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 7:31:30 PM)

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:31:31 PM)
matt- i could see how ceramics would be difficult, as it is a popular major, but i have to admit i am not very familiar with any sort of issue.

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:31:45 PM)
but, i do not work with current students very much. just incoming freshmen

mogval (ID=81) (Jan 18, 2001 7:32:07 PM)
what is the deadline for applying for financial aide & do you reapply year-to-year?

ann- did all your questions get answered?

ann (ID=78) (Jan 18, 2001 7:32:24 PM)
How many freshman enter with an undecided major

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:32:30 PM)
lots!

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:32:45 PM)
"undeclared" is actually our most popular major!

ann (ID=78) (Jan 18, 2001 7:32:50 PM)
that's good

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 7:32:54 PM)
There is no deadline for applying for financial aid as a freshman and yes you do need to apply every year for need based aid and the deadline for that is currently March 15

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:33:24 PM)
many people swith their majors in the first two years, so we encourage people to explore (while they complete general requirements).

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:33:38 PM)
you do not have to declare a major until the end of sophomore year

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:34:07 PM)
matt- did i miss any of your questions?

ann (ID=78) (Jan 18, 2001 7:34:10 PM)
How long after submitting the fafsa do you receive the info from them

MattH (ID=80) (Jan 18, 2001 7:34:31 PM)
Yeah, one more question

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 7:34:32 PM)
Anywhere from 3 to 4 weeks

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:35:49 PM)
matt?

MattH (ID=80) (Jan 18, 2001 7:35:51 PM)
Since I would be doing the double major and probably be taking at least an extra semester, even with all the AP credit, would the national merit scholarship cover the extra tuition, etc., or would I have to rely on need-based financial aid and loans, etc. for the extra time

mogval (ID=81) (Jan 18, 2001 7:36:00 PM)
Can I dual major in art& design w/in the State School and philosophy or mathematics within the private sector of AU? If yes, how is the tuition calculated?

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 7:36:20 PM)
Ann, use the postcard so they'll notify you that they've received your fafsa.

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:36:39 PM)
my understanding is that the scholarship covers only the 4 years. but, one semester is a small price to pay for two four year degrees, right?

MattH (ID=80) (Jan 18, 2001 7:36:50 PM)
true, true

ann (ID=78) (Jan 18, 2001 7:37:13 PM)
Can you tell me how you determine the amount of a presidential scholarship?

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:37:23 PM)
mogval- a student is charged the tuition of the school they started under, so you would be an A&D student who chose to doubel major in something in liberal arts

(This user has entered 4. Fin. Aid & Admissions) (IP = 209.34.91.23 )

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:37:35 PM)
presidential scholarships are determined by GPA and Rank in class

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:37:54 PM)
90+ gpa, top 10% of class

MattH (ID=80) (Jan 18, 2001 7:38:19 PM)
What other scholarships and aid are there that are applicable after the fourth year? (My parents have told me that I'm on my own, so this is a little bit of a concern for me)

mogval (ID=81) (Jan 18, 2001 7:38:43 PM)
Do you use weighted gpa's or regular ones?

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 7:38:48 PM)
Ann, the postcard would be used if you are submitting a paper fafsa to the federal processor.

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:38:49 PM)
gpa and rank are not strict guidelines as course selection and school you attend are also considered.

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:38:55 PM)
we look at your SAT or ACT as well

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:39:23 PM)
wmogval- we use whichever the school reports (or both)

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:39:41 PM)
we take a lot of time with each application, reviewing each student in light of his or her own situation

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:39:58 PM)
this way we gain a better understanding of who you are and what abilities you have

ann (ID=78) (Jan 18, 2001 7:40:09 PM)
thanks

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:40:25 PM)

but, AU's website keeps a list of outside resources

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 7:40:50 PM)
Matt, Need based aid and loans would be available to you your last year, if you qualified under the needs analysis methodology and also there are student alternative loans, but generally you need a co-signer and there is no guarantee that you would be approved for this type of loan.

There is not any specific aid for students with disabilities, but you may qualify for the Educational Opportunity Program if you are academically and economically disadvantaged. You apply to this program through admissions.

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:48:07 PM)
yeah- it is sort of a whirl wind of info

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 7:57:00 PM)
Derek, Didn't finish my last sentence-sorry. You have to get estimated aid packages from different colleges and compare the net cost to you. Also make sure you what you are looking at, as you have to be comparing apples to apples. We do not put parent loan eligibility or student alternative loan eligibility on our award notices and some other institutions do. You may have eligibility for these programs here, but you need to call us after you receive your award notice from us so that we can give you those values.

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:57:03 PM)

Hi Meryl

Mom (ID=77) (Jan 18, 2001 7:58:22 PM)
When do acceptance letters come out? My son just got notified he won a CANY award (bookstore credit) which I take as a very good sign he will be offered admission, but no official letter yet

Meryl (ID=61) (Jan 18, 2001 7:58:39 PM)
If i can get to my online application, and hand it in, i believe i will be at alfred in the fall

(or woould like to be)

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:59:14 PM)
We try to read applications in the order in which they are complete. Acceptance letters are mailed on an on-going basis. Everyone should have a decision by mid-March.

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 7:59:16 PM)
I believe acceptance letter start coming out in mid February

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 7:59:45 PM)
Meryl, we hope you're here too.

Mom (ID=77) (Jan 18, 2001 8:00:07 PM)
How soon after acceptance letter arrives would the financial aid offer arrive?

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 8:00:30 PM)
Typicall within a couple of weeks, assuming the Financial Aid

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 8:00:39 PM)
application is complete.

Mom (ID=77) (Jan 18, 2001 8:00:51 PM)
Oh, it will be!!!

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 8:01:26 PM)
Mom, As long as you have a copy of your student's fafsa in our office and an AU financial aid ap, we send out an estimated award notice within one to two weeks of the student's acceptance.

(This user has moved to 3. Fin. Aid & Admissions) (IP = 209.34.91.23 )

Mom (ID=77) (Jan 18, 2001 8:02:30 PM)
That is the big lesson we learned from my daughter going through the college applications process 2 years ago - apply early!! We mailed our FAFSA to processor on 1/4, and your applications last week. Except farm supplement & that will be going out soon

Derek (ID=84) (Jan 18, 2001 8:02:41 PM)
When you fill out the FAFSA does it work for all colleges or do you have to send each one a separate form?

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 8:03:32 PM)
Mom, Did you indicate Alfred University in the step 6 of the fafsa?

Mom (ID=77) (Jan 18, 2001 8:03:40 PM)
You bet

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 8:03:45 PM)
Derek, the FAFSA only needs to be completed once. results will be sent to all schools you indicate. Be sure to keep a copy.

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 8:04:29 PM)
Derek, Step 6 of the fafsa asks for college names/codes and this is what determines which colleges will be able to receive a copy of your student aid report electronically.

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 8:04:53 PM)
renee is back!

Back to the dual degree idea - I expect it would stretch out the completion time if he does internships or co-ops or whatever?

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 8:08:52 PM)
Mom-Do you live on the farm and operate it?

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 8:09:16 PM)
yes, co-op's and internships that stretch into the school year do delay graduation

Mom (ID=77) (Jan 18, 2001 8:09:26 PM)
Yes. My husband is the farmer. I do the books and have a part-time job off the farm

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 8:09:30 PM)
but, the expereince is WELL worth it!

Mom (ID=77) (Jan 18, 2001 8:09:44 PM)
and $$ too, for co-ops?

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 8:11:02 PM)
some- our career development center helps students identify opportunities

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 8:11:34 PM)
some majors (i.e. engineering) are more liekly to have paying internships then other majors (soft sciences, like sociology)

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 8:12:00 PM)
Mom, If you live on the farm and operate it , it is not considered an investment farm-see question #82 on the fafsa. Therefore, you do not have to complete the business/farm supplement.

Mom (ID=77) (Jan 18, 2001 8:13:06 PM)
The materials science faculty person who recommended the dual degree (mat sci & chem) suggested taking courses at Broome CC in summer to fulfill distribution requirements, but that would seem to kibosh summer internship opportunities

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 8:13:28 PM)
Mom, Haven't seen all the conversation about co-ops, but the student does not receive any financial aid while on co-op and should keep receipts for all their expenses while on co-op.

Mom (ID=77) (Jan 18, 2001 8:14:04 PM)
What expenses? Why receipts?

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 8:14:16 PM)
yes- but some of those courses could be taken freshman and soph year, co-op in junior year

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 8:14:47 PM)
I, personally, don't think it's aweful to delay graduation for a semester or year when the reason is "real life" hand on experience.

Mom (ID=77) (Jan 18, 2001 8:14:54 PM)
We had to fill out the supplement for other colleges anyway - the inconsiderate folks who require Profile

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 8:14:59 PM)
i will lead to better job opportunities down the road

Mom (ID=77) (Jan 18, 2001 8:15:09 PM)

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 8:15:37 PM)
just enjoing the conversation?

Mom (ID=77) (Jan 18, 2001 8:15:37 PM)
But what do you do about tuition/aid for the extra semester (s)?

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 8:16:35 PM)
i believe students can receive need-based aid for 5 years

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 8:16:48 PM)
diane? do you have the details?

Mom (ID=77) (Jan 18, 2001 8:17:44 PM)
DC - can you explain what you were saying about receipts for expenses while on co-op? I guess I don't understand what co-ops are

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 8:18:27 PM)
Mom, Living expenses, rent, food, work clothing, auto/transportation expenses, utilities, etc.. The receipts are needed as while on co-ops/internships, students can earn quite a bit of money, more than usual. In the following year's financial aid evaluation that income is considered and we use the expenses against the income and therefore the income's impact on the expected family contribution doesn't have such a large impact.

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 8:19:11 PM)
rick- any questions for us? :)

Ah... thanks, DC

Rick - Alfred (ID=59) (Jan 18, 2001 8:24:08 PM)
DC - you really require receipts from co-ops?

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 8:24:54 PM)
Mom, Need based aid, if eligible, would be awarded for the fifth year, however this would not be the cases if the student has exceeded the maximum time frame in which the student is expected to finish a baccalaureate degree program. This is defined as 150% of the published length of the program. For example, Liberal Arts requires 124 credit hours to complete a degree. Therefore, the maximum time frame for which this student may be eligible for aid is the period during which the student attempts 186 credit hours (124 x 1.5 = 186). This is part of the Satisfactory Progress Standards Policy. Hope it helps.

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 8:26:24 PM)
Rick, We do not require them if the student does not wish to have his expenses netted against his income. But, for need based aid, it is certainly for their own benefit,

DC counselor (ID=74) (Jan 18, 2001 8:26:40 PM)

Mom, When we see co-op checked for a semester on #8 of the financial aid application, we send a package out for the other semester and put a note on the award notice about keeping co-op receipts.

Renee @ AU (ID=67) (Jan 18, 2001 8:32:43 PM)
